Physics!

Today, you should have read about heat transfer by radiation. This is a form of energy exchange between molecules that happens because of light! Physicists use the word radiation to refer to any type of light wave. Although some types of radiation are dangerous and cancer causing, many are ordinary. These ordinary types of waves are used often for communication - radio waves (example 92.9 KJEE), microwaves (example: microwave ovens and cell phones). The type of wave we usually refer to in heat transfer is infrared radiation. Infrared is invisible to the human eye. But basically infrared radiation is given off by hot things - the sun, a fire, human beings. When you can feel heat coming off of something that you are NOT touching, that is usually infrared radiation that is causing it. Snakes "see" in infrared. Why do you think snakes' eyesight developed to be sensitive to infrared radiation?

Your job is to come up with a question to ask me. Each period needs to come up with one question that is physics related. Mrs. Jones will help you post a comment to the blog so that I can respond tonight. (Your night is my day while I am in Kazakhstan.) If you would like, you may ask other questions. Please be sure to let me know which period you are when you make your post. Look for your reponse tomorrow. I will title the responses by period.

2nd period: Lennnyyy!!

3rd period: I hope that Kolby and Chase are behaving. Good job, Travis! Try to stay busy. Try to learn.

4th period: Please continue to be respectful with Mrs. Jones. Hi Melanie! Dobrae Ootra! The Russian lessons have really helped. They think I know Russian. hee hee.

5th period: I hope you guys are being kind to Mrs. Jones and that you are not tardy!!! Emily, Erika!! Shaden - are you helping your neighbors? Javier, Jorge and Daniel: where have you been eating lunch? Are you doing your classwork/homework???????????

6th period: Thank you for trying hard to understand. Please help each other. You guys are a nice way to end the day. :)

Hi Mrs. Woods,

We miss you at school! It's great that the three of you are getting along so well. Maks is very adorable.

I've been able to see period 3 and 6 once or twice. They are very helpful to each other and are trying to learn.

There is a new sub this week. She was a physics major during college. She'll be emailing you soon; do you have access to email?

I'll show her how to access these posts tomorrow.

Period 2 class asked--
Is there a big test when we get back?

why is radiation used for cancer patients?

Period 2 - check your unit calendar!

Period 3 - Thank you for thiking about radiation! Radiation (as used in the medical profession) is a highly energetic form of Light that is used to kill cancerous cells. This kind of radiation is very dangerous and some times good cells get killed as well as bad cells. The radiation targets the cancer cells and basically incinerates them. This is a form of heat transfer. You will learn much more about this in Biology in 11th grade. Mrs. Carey will teach you about the biology side of this in great detail. See all science relies on physics!! Ha Ha - I hope Mrs. Carey reads this. :)
