We have had the best Christmas ever! What a blessing this year has been. Maksim is the smartest little reader I have ever seen. Hopefully in the next few years his activity level will mellow out a bit. I am sure his teachers would appreciate it if he did. However, he is the first kindergartner in his class to begin reading. He reads these little phonics type books. After his first successful read he said his brain hurt. Funny. But he is really starting to enjoy it.
We built and launched our first rocket. Maks loved it. He thought the sulfur based fuel smelled a bit. 'Tis true.
We went to the snow and had a snow ball - make that ice ball - fight. My eye got poked out. Maks cheek got all red. Dad ended up with no injuries curiously.
On Christmas eve, the Kern family came and made gingerbread houses with us. It is a fun tradition we have started. This was the 4th year I think. So much candy and silliness. Then it was time to wait for Santa!
On Christmas morning Santa Clause came and brought presents. Not as many presents as he has in the past but there were some cool surprises. Santa was tired of wrapping presents so the big steering wheel for Maksi's XBOX 360 was just in the box it comes in. On top of the box was the cutest giraffe ever seen. Maks has to pass through the living room to get to our room. He came running in. "Mom, quick. Dad, Hurry! He came, he came."
"How do you know?" I asked.
"He brought me a cute giraffe with a red ribbon. But I think he forgot the toys!" Then he runs to the giraffe and hugs it and names it Gerry. It was too funny.
I told him to look around and find the other toys. So in the end he found his favorite: the steering wheel! (as if we had any doubt what the fav toy would be).
He also got these fabulous books called "The magic treehouse". They are chapter books meant for 3rd graders to read. But I am reading them to him to help him with concentration. He sat mesmerized for 45 minutes listening to me read - with NO pictures. I am so excited. He kept asking for one more chapter. Then, he decided he wanted me to read for a hundred miles. That is his new favorite saying. "(Insert what he wants to do here) for a hundred miles."
And Dad got a brand new - shaped just for him - surfboard!! He was too stunned to smile I think.
Then Uncle Dave and Auntie Can spent the day with us eating cinnamon rolls and BBQ turkey with all the trimmings. It was lovely and mellow.
This morning we have played more racing games, ate breakfast, and are planning to go see Despereaux (spelling?). I love, love, love being a teacher for many reasons but one is so I have these times off. 2 weeks home with my favorite boy in the whole world. Priceless!
I am feeling lucky, lucky, lucky.

Miss Woods!
I hope you still remember me, and I especially hope you're not freaked out that I'm sending you a message via your family's blog, but I really wanted to say hello and see how you are doing. It was the strangest thing but a couple nights ago I was having a bit of insomnia and I just began thinking of you and good memories of our physics class. I remembered that Lisa had told me awhile back that you created a blog during your adoption so I wanted to see if I couldn't locate it, and I'm so happy I did :-)
I'm glad to see that Maks and your family are growing so wonderfully and you all appear so happy and healthy.
It seems so much has happened in the last couple years in my life, but in a nutshell, after high school graduation (from Olive Grove Charter), I went on to UCSB and graduated from there in June 2008 (with a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Art History - can you believe it?), then got married to my wonderful Brandon in July, worked in religious education for about 7 months at a church in Santa Barbara, and then just recently moved to Charleston, South Carolina on Jan. 2, 2009, which is where I am now. Brandon is getting an MBA here and, ironically enough, I just got licensed and hired as an insurance producer for State Farm, so that is generally what I've been up to thus far...
I hope you're still enjoying school and loving work; you're such an exceptionally wonderful teacher. Maybe one of these days when we come back to SB to visit I'll be able to visit you at SBHS, provided that you're still there.
Take care and much love,
Deanna (Danalevich then but now Griffith)
